Most people who have never tried Pilates believe that Pilates on the mat is the least challenging form, and from there, you work your way up to the Pilates apparatus (Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Ladder Barrel). But in fact, the opposite is true.

The best and safest way to begin learning and practicing Pilates is to work with a certified Pilates trainer on the apparatus (also referred to as equipment), and then incorporate classes on the mat as you become more proficient and confident. Pilates apparatus, such as the Reformer, are designed to protect your neck and back while you learn how to “scoop” and “activate your powerhouse” correctly. The client has the full attention of the trainer, so each movement and exercise is monitored and form is corrected if necessary. The client and trainer can discuss goals, outside workout regimens and safe modifications once the client is ready to incorporate mat and other equipment classes into his/her weekly workout schedule. This approach will limit the number of injuries and possible neck and back pain – especially if the client has not been exercising on a regular basis and has experienced neck and back pain in the past.

At Lents Pilates, we believe exercise should be fun so people will want to work out often and be healthy and strong. The trainers at Lents Pilates have worked with many different types of clients – post surgery, post rehabilitation, prenatal, postnatal, children, teenagers, seniors, athletes, dancers and those living with fibromyalgia, arthritis and other issues. We will help you learn how to listen to your body and keep it safe by creating client-specific workouts and schedules, thus resulting in less pain and injuries.
